Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s belated response on the Manipur violence, especially the sexual crimes that have sensationally unravelled over the past few days, is the focus of this AIDEM interactions.
Two young women socio-political-legal observers- Delhi based PhD student Kim and Supreme Court lawyer Thulasi K Raj- analyse the Prime Minister’s statement and the responses it has generated not only in Manipur but the country as a whole, with a special emphasis on the North Eastern States. Kim and Thulasi point out that beyond the emotional rhetoric, the Prime Minister and his associates in the governments at the Centre and the State have to take more substantive measures to rebuild Manipur and trust among the people.
It is a brave and bold intraction on burning Manipur. I congratulate The Aidem team to broadcast this highly inflammable discussion
Overall , a relevant and forceful discussion. But really appalled to see that a veteran journalist , a socially proactive lawyer and a young social activist from the North East missed to mention that the women paraded naked and molested in the presence of police . The interviewer journalist and the legal expert made references to the Gujarat genocide of 2002 and drew parallels to present day Manipur , but omitted to point out how the police was complicit in this heinous parading of the Manipuri tribal women in May 2023. That was a clear connection between Gujarat 2002 and Manipur 2023. Failing to mention is a terrible oversight . We are writing this on behalf of a group of students from the North East , who are studying in Delhi
