Judicial Reform Or Paving the Way for a Police State?

The three major bills introduced by Union Home Minister to replace Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code and Indian Evidence Act have generated intense debate. The big question is whether it enhances inclusiveness in the judicial system or just makes it more punitive.

The claims of removing colonial legacy and clearing the backlog of cases do not seem to be convincing at this point. The government has also chosen to bypass the democratic procedures that need to be observed while bringing such a major policy reform.

The AIDEM discusses different aspects of this contentious move of the Narendra Modi government with Kalanidhi Veerasamy, DMK member of the Lok Sabha, Ravinder Kumar, Lawyer, Supreme Court and President of Rashtriya Mukti Morcha and Thulasi K Raj, lawyer at Supreme Court. Senior media person Anand Haridas anchors the discussion.

Good discussion. Young lawyer Thulasi Raj made important , perceptive points . DMK MP was good from his position . Have heard Ravinder Kumar speak more eloquently in many other discussions. The anchor failed to draw him out. The anchor has to be more proactive and involved
