Legacy media in Kerala is itself responsible for the horrible state of affairs. They moved away from professional standards set by stalwarts like BRP, as Mr Thomas pointed out. I was an avid Asianet watcher ever since it started broadcasting. I don’t watch it anymore because there is no program worthy to watch now. The social media has wormed in to several of its program spaces. Most of the debates are unwatchable, a tug-of-war is more satisfying than watching TV debates. But this was not the case before.
I don’t watch any channels these days except when some earth shattering news breaks out. After Adani takeover and most journalists left I stopped watching NDTV to which I was addicted to for years. Adani takeover was a perfect murder of good journalism, with no trace of blood. Not me several people must have stopped watching NDTV. A survey would give you a good picture. The sad part of the tragedy is that there is no credible media in the legacy sector space.
Legacy media in Kerala can still come out of this conundrum if they set strict standards —- in broadcasting, recruiting, training. In print media special stories are the strength. Legacy media hardly focus’ on special stories. Instead of pushing the microphone to get the bytes of political leaders they should go and meet real people. There are innumerable stories elsewhere which are hardly reported. A new media culture is the need of the hour
